Originating in the pit looms of the Bagalkot district of North Karnataka, the elegant Ilkal sarees are woven using the unique Tope Teni technique.
In this technique, the pure silk pallu is woven separately and then attached to the body warp using interlocked loops, giving Ilkal sarees their distinctive identity.
The Artform
Named after the town of Ilkal in Karnataka,aj, these sarees are known for simple yet elegant patterns and a richly designed pallu featuring motifs such as lotuses, palanquins, temple structures, and elephants.
The four to six-inch wide border is the main attraction, handwoven with great care and precision by skilled weavers.
